Youth Tour

Each summer, one student whose parents are F.E.M. Electric members, will join teens from local electric cooperatives across the country on the trip of a lifetime.

2005 Youth Tour Group
One high schooler from F.E.M.’s area in Faulk, Edmunds and McPherson Counties will travel to Washington, D.C., along with 1,400 other students from Touchstone Energy co-ops throughout the U.S. and take part in the Rural Electric Youth Tour usually in June. Transportation (including airfare), room and board, entertainment and sight-seeing events are all paid for by F.E.M. Electric. Students are only required to bring personal spending money for snacks and souvenirs.

Each year, high school students learn first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, community development and today’s social issues. In addition to gaining direct knowledge of our government and Washington, D.C. monuments, winning students will also learn more about the cooperative philosophy and rural electrification.

Among the sites included in this incredible free tour are the Lincoln Memorial, Washington National Cathedral, the White House, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, the Washington Monument, the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the FDR Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Mount Vernon, and a boat cruise and dance on the Potomac River. The tour also features a breakfast briefing with members of SD’s congressional delegation and an opportunity to job shadow in the delegation’s offices.

How to qualify – Applying for this fabulous free vacation is not difficult. Each entrant must submit an essay, 500 words or more, on a subject F.E.M. chooses each year.

All essays must be typed and include a cover sheet which states the title of the essay, the entrant’s name, parents’ names, address, telephone number, school and year in school. Entrants must be a dependent of an F.E.M. Electric member. The essays will be critically evaluated and  one entrant from the F.E.M. Electric service area will be selected as the winner for the Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C.

The information will be available from the area schools in January, in the February and March issues of the F.E.M. Cooperative Connections or by contacting our office at 605-426-6891 or 1-800-587-5880 .
