BEFORE YOU DIG….. Call South Dakota One call --- it's the law!
According to South Dakota law, all requests for locating FEM owned (primary) underground distribution cable must go through South Dakota One Call service before any digging is done.
When you call SD One Call at 1-800-781-7474, you set in motion locating activities by all of the utilities who have buried facilities where you want to dig. The information you will need when you contact SD One Call is:
You will need to give notice at least 48 hours in advance under normal circumstances; however, if there is a holiday or weekend involved, you will need to allow additional time.
SD One Call has a map of F.E.M. Electric's underground distribution lines. From this map they determine when F.E.M. Electric needs to be contacted to locate its lines. Using fax machine, SD One Call sends notice of your location request to FEM Electric.
There is no charge to you to call SD One Call. FEM Electric pays for each notice that is sent to FEM. FEM does not charge a fee to locate and mark it underground facilities; however, if you fail to request a locate and dig into underground lines, you will be billed for any damage incurred to the underground facilities.
If you would like FEM Electric to locate your own (secondary) underground lines, you will need to call the FEM office to request this service in addition to contacting the South Dakota One Call.
